March 2015 UPDATE - REVISION OF ISO 15489-1

    Mar 13, 2015

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) technical committee 46, subcommittee 11 (TC46/SC11), which is responsible for the revision of ISO 15489-1 Information and Documentation: Records management - Part 1: Concepts and Principles, released the draft international standard (DIS) version of the document for review and comment in January 2015.

ARMA International responded by publishing a call for members and other information professionals to review and provide comments about the draft for ARMA to consider before casting its vote (affirmative, negative, or abstain) for the standard. About two dozen people responded to this call and are to provide their comments to ARMA by March 23.

Depending on the results of the voting, which closes on April 2, the standard will either move forward toward publication or be referred back to TC46/SC11 for further work. This project is also on the agenda for discussion on June 3 when TC46/SC11 meets in Bejiing for its annual meeting.

    About the ISO Ballot Process

While ARMA International casts its vote through the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) organization, i.e., the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), the U.S. TAG votes, in aggregate, will be used to formulate the U.S. vote to be delivered to ISO. Thus, at the highest level, an ISO vote is a "country-specific" vote and may not reflect the unique vote(s) of individual U.S. TAG voters.
