Hong Kong’s Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data and the Korea Internet & Security Agency announced on November 5 that they joined representatives from the Asia-Pacific privacy community in signing the Asia Privacy Bridge Forum Joint Declaration. The agreement seeks to strengthen privacy research, education, and policy cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

The declaration “reflects the recognition of our commitment to balancing the free flow of information and personal data privacy protection from our international counterparts,” said Hong Kong Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data Stephen Kai-yi Wong. “I shall be very glad to share our experience in law enforcement as well as promotion and education on data protection in Hong Kong, and explore common interests in joint research topics and policy cooperation initiatives.”

According to the announcement, the joint declaration calls for deepening international research relations, which includes promoting collaboration and co-operation in research agenda, policy development, and enforcement regarding personal data protection. It calls for the parties to collaborate on joint privacy research programs in an effort to bridge the gaps among different personal data protection systems. Additionally, it calls for participation in the annual Asia Privacy Bridge Forum “to deliberate regional and international laws, policies and other controversial issues on personal data protection, and promote co-operation and communication with other regional fora.”
