Illegal Marketers Set for Six-Figure Penalty from the ICO

    Oct 10, 2012
On October 1, the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) announced it is set to issue two monetary penalties totaling more than £250,000 (about $400,000 U.S.) to illegal marketers for distributing millions of unsolicited spam texts. According to an ICO press release, the actions of the two individuals violate the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR). The ICO said the recipients have 28 days to respond and prove compliance with the PECR. ICO Director of Operations Simon Entwisle said they “are already working to identify other individuals and companies involved in these unlawful practices.”
