The China Internet Network Information Center released a survey revealing that China’s online population hit 485 million users at the end of June, jumping 6% from 2010. According to a Yahoo News article, the survey shows an increase of 27.7 million web users since December, which is equivalent to the entire population of Malaysia.

The survey also revealed that the number of people surfing the web on mobile phones reached 318 million, which increased by 14.94 million from six months ago. The article noted that the Internet has become a popular marketplace with the survey showing that the number of users shopping online rose 7.6% from the end of last year.

According to the article, Weibo, a site that is similar to Twitter, increased from 63.11 million users last year to 195 million users and now has the fastest-growing number of users in China. The article noted that the site is loved by Chinese netizens because it allows for mass expression.

With more than one-third of China’s 1.3 billion population online, the strength and influence of the Internet is creating great concern in Beijing, Yahoo News reported, because of its potential as a tool to cause social unrest. The article noted that Beijing authorities have increased surveillance of the Internet and are blocking web content they deem to be politically sensitive.
