Information governance is a huge topic today in every field of business. In the legal realm, we have seen our clients become more concerned about how we protect the information (in both electronic and traditional form) that they have entrusted to our firm. These concerns were being expressed in the RFPs and Outside Council Guidelines of potential clients, and we saw that winning their business could be directly related to how we cared for their information.

Hutch Johnson is the records manager for Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, a 100 attorney law firm headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware. His legal industry and IRM experience dates back to the early 1990s, and his time at the Philadelphia District Attorney's office. Hutch has been in his current position for 12 years and has spearheaded a program that has greatly reduced Young Conaway's dependence on paper records and offsite storage.

We needed to understand what information we had, what value it had, and all the possible places where it could reside. An Information Governance program is what we needed.
