OrganizationsAcademy of Certified Archivists (ACA)An international credentialing organization for professional archivists founded in 1989 that develops and administers written examinations assessing the professional knowledge and skills of candidates for certification. The ACA created the Role Delineation Statement used by other organizations and educational entities to structure job descriptions and curricula. Applicants qualify for ACA certification by demonstrating by written examination their professional competence in the seven archival domains. The ACA participates in the definition and advancement of professional archival education, concepts, and issues. It identifies and promotes the understanding of archival goals and standards. Professional certification through the ACA provides the only available credential by which employers are able to evaluate the qualifications of prospective archival staff members. AIIMAn international organization concerned with managing documents, content, and business processes that provides its members with educational opportunities, professional development, reference and knowledge resources, networking events, and industry advocacy. Formerly known as Association for Information and Image Management. American Association for State and Local History (AASLH)A U.S. organization that provides leadership and support for its members who preserve and interpret state and local history in order to make the past more meaningful to all Americans. American Library Association (ALA)A professional organization for librarians and associated members whose mission is to provide leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all. American National Standards Institute (ANSI)A private, non-profit organization that administers and coordinates the United States’ voluntary standardization and conformity assessment system to enhance both the global competitiveness of U.S. business and the U.S. quality of life by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment systems and safeguarding their integrity. ANSI serves as the U.S. representative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ARMA International (ARMA)ARMA International is a not-for-profit professional association and the authority on managing records and information. ARMA provides education and information about the business and technology of managing records and information—including standards and best practices—specifically for records managers, corporate counsels, IT professionals, and others involved in managing records and information. Association for Work Process Improvement, The (TAWPI)An international, not-for-profit membership organization whose primary focus is on educating members to sharpen their management skills, improve productivity and performance of their organizations, and maximize their value as professionals. Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA)The ACA works to enhance the archival professional in Canada through leadership of the profession, including awareness and education programs, advocating before government, and communicating with other groups. Association of Commonwealth Archivists and Records Managers (ACARM)An association founded to provide a link for archival institutions, archivists, and records managers from across the Commonwealth to share strategies and address professional issues of concern to its members. Australian Society of Archivists (ASA)The peak professional body for archivists in Australia. It was formed in 1975 in response to the growing number of archivists in Australia and to the increasing demand for archival skills. Its objectives are to promote a professional identity among archivists; promote the keeping care and use of archives and encourage research and development in all areas of archival practice; establish and maintain standards of archival practice and professional conduct among archivists, including standards of archival qualifications and professional training; encourage the responsible use of archives including cooperating with other organizations and groups with common interests and concerns; encourage communication and cooperation among archivists, their institutions, and the users of archives; and publish and disseminate information relevant to the archival profession. BFMA International (BFMA)An association for forms and business processes professionals with a program of publications, an annual conference, seminars, and a network of local chapters. Formerly known as the Business Forms Management Association. Canadian Library Association (CLA)A non-profit voluntary organization consisting of a diverse group of individuals and organizations involved or interested in library or information sciences in Canada. Council of State Archivists (CoSA)A U.S. organization of state archivists and their deputies from each of the 50 states, five territories, and the District of Columbia. Working collectively, they encourage cooperation among the states and state boards on matters of mutual interest, define and communicate archival and records concerns at a national level, and work with the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and other national organizations to ensure that the nation’s documentary heritage is preserved and accessible. Formerly known as Council of State Historical Records Coordinators. Institute of Certified Records Managers (ICRM)The international certifying organization of and for professional records and information managers. The ICRM was incorporated in 1975 to meet the requirements to have a standard by which persons involved in records and information management could be measured, accredited, and recognized according to criteria of experience and capability established by their peers. The ICRM exists to develop and administer a certification program that identifies and recognizes records and information professionals. It is the official certifying body for ARMA International and the Nuclear Information and Records Management Association. International Council on Archives (ICA)A non-governmental organization, acting internationally, that is concerned with records and archives and their role in the conduct of public and private activities; the protection of individual and collective rights; the advancement of human knowledge and culture; and good corporate and public governance. ICA’s fundamental aim is to encourage the preservation, development, and use of the world’s archival heritage and the promotion of appropriate training, best practices and standards, and international cooperation. International Organization for Standardization (ISO)An international, non-governmental organization of national standards bodies that identifies what international standards are required by business, government, and society, develops them in partnership with the sectors that will put them to use, adopts them by transparent procedures based on national input, and delivers them to be implemented worldwide. Library and Archives Canada (LAC)The Canadian governmental agency whose mission is to preserve the documentary heritage of Canada for the benefit of present and future generations; to be a source of enduring knowledge accessible to all, contributing to the cultural, social, and economic advancement of Canada; to facilitate in Canada cooperation among communities involved in the acquisition, preservation, and diffusion of knowledge; and to serve as the continuing memory of the government of Canada and its institutions. National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators (NAGARA)A professional U.S. organization dedicated to the improvement of federal, state, and local government records and information management. Records Management Association of Australasia (RMAA)A professional Australia-based association that enables records management professionals to develop and utilize their skills and experience to leverage the value of records as corporate assets and as evidence of business activities. Records Management Society (RMS)A professional U.K.-based association for all those who work in or are concerned with records or information management with the aim of improving the status of records management and records managers through representation, external liaison, and promotion of professional development through sharing knowledge and expertise. Society of American Archivists (SAA)A U.S.-based organization that is comprised of professional archivists and others from around the world who are committed to ensuring the identification, preservation, and use of records of historical value. Society of Archivists (SoA)The principal professional body for archivists, archive conservators, and records managers in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Special Libraries Association (SLA)An international organization of information resource experts who collect, analyze, evaluate, package, and disseminate information to facilitate accurate decision-making in corporate, academic, and government settings. Standards Council of Canada (SCC)The national standards organization in Canada that carries out a variety of functions intended to ensure the effective and coordinated operation of standardization. It also represents Canada’s interests in standards-related matters in foreign and international forums. Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA)A non-profit trade association dedicated to ensuring that storage networks become complete and trusted solutions across the information technology community. Workflow and Reengineering International Association (WARIA)A member association that works to identify and clarify issues that are common to users of workflow and electronic commerce and those who are in the process of reengineering their organizations. Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC)A non-profit, international organization of workflow vendors, users, analysts, and university/research groups that promotes and develops the use of workflow through the establishment of standards for software terminology, interoperability, and connectivity between workflow products. World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)An international consortium that works together to develop World Wide Web standards and guidelines that ensure long-term growth for the Web. |
