The Digital Records Conversion Process: Program Planning, Requirements, Procedures

This standard provides information on:

  • Keeping electronic records authentic during conversion
  • Planning programs for records conversion
  • Understanding recordkeeping requirements during conversion

Most business documents today are “born” digital – and they include far more than conventional word processing files and spreadsheets. Organizations have to consider how to manage e-mail, text messages, instant messages and more. In addition, today’s business environment often demands that organizations convert paper documents to digital format so they can be economically stored and quickly accessed, sometimes by multiple, concurrent and remote users.

This standard provides requirements for ensuring that electronic records remain authentic and trustworthy as they are converted from one digital recordkeeping system to another.

Part I of the standard addresses the decisions relating to program planning and recordkeeping issues. Part II discusses the actual conversion process.
