Records and Information Management: The Fundamentals

Program Description:
A comprehensive two-day workshop designed to enable individuals new to RIM to learn the profession quickly and become prepared to function successfully as records managers. You will learn tried and proven practical approaches for developing and strengthening organization-wide RIM programs. In addition, you will learn to manage digital (electronic) records, how to develop legally-valid records retention programs, and use state-of-the-art technologies to manage their programs. This seminar is a great way to get up to speed before the conference begins.
Program Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define RIM and explain why quality RIM programs are essential, as well as build executive and stakeholder support
- Develop strategic plans for RIM programs, including components necessary for successful organization-wide RIM programs
- Implement tried and proven strategies for developing, strengthening, and managing RIM programs
Mark Langemo, Ed.D., CRM, is professor emeritus in the College of Business and Public Administration at the University of North Dakota. Langemo, a widely published author, has 30 years of experience as a university professor of records management, IT, and related information management courses. His 40 years of experience in RIM includes more than 600 consulting and seminar engagements worldwide.
Day one:
Session 1: Introduction to professional records and information management, overview of program establishment, and recommended components for quality RIM programs
Session 2: Winning strategies for establishing new RIM programs and for strengthening existing programs
Session 3: Managing electronic records
Session 4: Developing and implementing legally-valid records retention programs
Day two:
Session 1: Developing state-of-the-art filing systems for paper and other records
Session 2: Managing inactive records, records disposition, vital records, and the roles of records centers and archives
Session 3: An introduction to imaging and applications of film-based iImaging in records management
Session 4: Digital (electronic) imaging and applications in records management
