Records and Information Management Self-Assessment

Achieve Your Professional Development Goals with the RIM Self-Assessment

Finally, the help you need to navigate your RIM career is here: ARMA International’s RIM Self-Assessment.

Regardless of what stage you’re at in your career, this online tool will help you identify your strengths and any gaps in your skills and knowledge. It will even point you to resources that can help you address those gaps.

The assessment is not a test, but a self-evaluation tool. It’s based on ARMA International’s Records and Information Management (RIM) Core Competencies, which are designed to give individuals and organizations insight into the skills needed to successfully manage records and information. The assessment covers six domains: business functions, RIM practices, risk management, communications and marketing, information technology, and leadership.

You can use the RIM Self-Assessment results to:

  • Document your strengths to management when discussing your performance, career goals, and development needs
  • Improve your skills and increase your market value
  • Create a professional development plan to guide your career
The tool is easy and it’s free to members of ARMA International. And your results will remain confidential.

How Do You Use the RIM Self-Assessment?
Working through the RIM Self-Assessment, you will identify the competencies you need as an information management professional. Following the assessment, you will be given a Gap Analysis report that identifies the resources available to help you strengthen your knowledge and skills. This will give you the roadmap you need to develop your professional development plan.

To use the assessment:

  • You must be a member of ARMA International.
  • The assessment will open in a new browser window, so be sure your pop-up blocker is set to allow the connection.
  • Log in using your e-mail address and ARMA International member password. You will be taken to the RIM Self-Assessment to begin. Save your results any time by moving to the next page in the assessment. Your assessment will be saved and you can refer to it and your results at any time.

About the RIM Core Competencies
The RIM Core Competencies make up the backbone of the RIM Self-Assessment. ARMA International developed the competencies to give organizations and individuals insight into the skills needed to successfully manage records and information. They are organized by level and domain. Levels reflect the amount of knowledge or experience a person has relevant to a specific topic or skill set regardless of time spent in the profession. Domains are categories of competencies in a particular performance area that are the major responsibilities or duties that make up the profession.

There are six domains: Business Functions, RIM Practices, Risk Management, Communications and Marketing, Information Technology, and Leadership. Within each domain are task statements that identify the knowledge and skills required to perform the task competently. At an organizational level, the competencies are designed to provide the guidance managers and human resources professionals need to craft position descriptions for new or existing RIM positions.
